Week 26 - February 18 - February 22 (No School Monday)

Happy Friday Families! We had a super fun week this week! Thank you to all our parent volunteers who helped make Great Hearts Day run smoothly!
Reminder, there is no school Monday for President's Day. Don't forget to submit your book orders as well! The kiddos earned their final pom pom this week!! As a reward, we got a new classroom pet! Say hello to Captain Bubbles!


We also have 5 nice chrysalis' this week and one butterfly has emerged so far!
           

Here's a look at the upcoming week!

Spalding: We are so close to learning all of the phonograms we will learn for kindergarten. This week we will learn ie and age (cue: three letter).  Since we had so many words last week that were a bit more demanding we will be reviewing these words again next week.  They are time, have, blue, chance, charge, little, are. 

Sight Words:Thank you for review sight words with your child nightly. This week we will review lists 1-5. 

Literature: Our story this week will be "The Ugly Duckling.” We will use this story and the story “Chrysanthemum” to discuss the importance of accepting others and appreciating our differences. Our poem will be Simple Simon.

Math: This week in math we will practice addition through counting on. An example problem might include the equation 3+2=? and a number line. They would start at the number 3 on the number line, then count two more numbers saying “4, 5”. They would then know that 3+2=5. On Friday, we will have an assessment on addition and counting on.

History: This week in History we will begin our unit on American Presidents. We will start our journey by discussing what a leader is and the characteristics they should exhibit. We will then chat about the duties of the President. with the first president of the United States, George Washington. Students will learn about honesty by listening to the story of George Washington’s life and the tale of the cherry tree.

Week 25- February 11-February 15

Happy Sunday! We have a fun week coming up in kindergarten! Thursday is Great Hearts Day! If your child is a half day student they are invited to stay for the whole day! Please let me know if you still want to pick them up at noon and I will have them ready to go. We are having another Scholastic Book Order! Spalding:
 This week there will be no new phonograms so that we can focus on our spelling words which will introduce all the jobs of silent final e. 
-time-job 1- the silent “e” jumps over a consonant to tell the vowel to say its name.  (most common)
-have- (the “e” is double underlined and has a 2 next to it).  job 2- English words don’t end in v.
-blue-(the “e” is double underlined and has a 2 next to it).  job 2- English words don’t end in u. 
-chance- (the “e” is double underlined and has a 3 next to it). job 3- Anytime a “c” is followed by an “e” at the end of a word, it will make the second sound. 
-charge-(the “e” is double underlined and has a 3 next to it).  job 3- Anytime a “g” is followed by an “e” at the end of a word, it will make the second sound. 
-lit  tle (the “e” is double underlined and has a 4 next to it).  job 4- every syllable must have a vowel. Syllables are separated in Spalding.
-are- (the “e” is double underlined and has a 5 next to it).  job 5- no job.

On Thursday, when we celebrate Great Hearts Day and the virtue of friendship. We will use our writing skills to create cards for a friend. 

Sight Words: We will continue to review list 5. We have now learned 50 sight words, yay! 

LiteratureThis upcoming week, we will be reading Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. We will explore the elements of a fairy tale and read versions of Snow White from around the world. Our Poem will be One, Two Buckle My Shoe.

Math: 
This week in math we will begin addition! We will explore simple addition problems by using number bond mats and unifix cubes to help us visually understand written problems. We will learn a few math vocabulary terms (plus, equal) as well as what the “+” and “=” symbols represent.

History: 
This week we are learning all about our own state; Arizona! We will find Arizona on the map and discuss our state’s history. Students will be able to name our state bird and flower as well as identify our flag. We will learn more about the desert climate, especially the Sonoran Desert’s animals and plants.  Students will learn the 5 C’s of Arizona; climate, cotton, copper, cattle, and citrus. We will discover interesting facts about the Saguaro cactus and the animals that call one their home.
